Some Answers to Commonly Asked Questions
- Why do Girl Scouts sell cookies?
The cookie sale program is an important part of Girl Scouting. Not only does it fund programs and activities, but it teaches girls important life skills such as learning to set goals, handling money responsibly, greeting the public and answering questions, and following through with a commitment.
- Where do the proceeds from the cookie sale go?
The cookie sale also provides troops with discretionary money for "extras" such as trips, service projects, camping equipment and special activities. All proceeds support Girl Scouting locally in the Girl Scouts Heart Of New Jersey. Some of the council activities and projects that are funded by the cookie sale include: financial aid, leadership and citizenship training, facility and property maintenance, math, science, and technology activities, and career awareness and job preparation programs.
- How can I help my daughter?
Work in partnership with your daughter, support her sales activity, help her set her goals, assist with money handling and record keeping and make sure she takes an active role in selling so she does not miss out on the learning opportunities offered by participating in the program.
SAFETY is our first priority when your daughter participates in the Cookie Sale Program. Please be sure to review the following guidelines BEFORE your daughter starts to sell:
- Written permission must be obtained from a girl's parent or guardian before the girl participates in a council product sale. Please complete the Parent Permission and Responsibility form and give it to your daughter's troop cookie manager before your daughter sells.
- An adult must be present when your daughter is selling.
- Girls should learn and practice personal safety protection skills as outlined in their handbooks. For example:
- Do not enter any homes
- Use safe pedestrian practices
- Do not carry large amounts of money
- Provisions for safeguarding the money must be made in advance
- Girls must not give out their telephone numbers or addresses
- Girls should be identifiable as Girl Scouts by wearing a membership pin or uniform or carrying a membership card
- Girls should dress appropriately for weather conditions
- Money is collected when product is sold
