Block/Tenant Associations
Block/Tenant associations are an essential part of crime prevention. Liasons from Plainfield associations meet in the evenings, every 4th Tuesday of the month (6:30 PM). Meetings are currently being held at the offices of the United Presbyterian Church at 525 East Front Street.
2008/07:
- The Traffic Bureau (TB) has been reorganized and is enforcing traffic laws throughout the city, focusing on school areas and high accident streets, summons issuance has risen.
- Driver education and the application for federal grants (for speed bumps, traffic signs, cameras) are part of the TB plan.
- The speed notification trailer is being placed in various parts of the city, police enforcement follows after placement.
- Public Works is responsible for the replacement of street signs and the placing of new signs following standards set by the NJ Department of Transportation.
- Street light (not traffic) outage can be reported to Public Works (by reporting the pole number) or by contacting PSE&G directly.
- As part of National Night Out (August 5) events, Youth Day (August 2) will be at Library Park where: 25 new bicycles will be given away; High Gear Cyclery will repair bikes; 400 helmets will be distributed; a safety course set up; plus food, face painting, t-shirts and more will be available.
- Next Meeting: August 26.
2008/06:
- Muhlenberg: On Thursday, June 26, the People's Organization for Progress (POP) will be attending a public meeting (9:30 AM @ National Conference Center in the East Windsor Holiday Inn, Exit 8 off the NJ Turnpike). A bus will be leaving from Muhlenberg parking lot @ 8:00 AM.
- YMCA: Aside from offering various programs for pre-school, after-school, summer camp, etc., the YMCA will be constructing a playground in the rear of their facilities on July 19 (8-4), July 20 (2-5), July 21 (8-4). If you would like to volunteer to help in the construction, contact John Tilli at (908) 756-6060, ext 109.
- Cedarbrook Park: Per Union County, pond re-construction will be completed by end of summer.
- PABA: Pemberton Avenue Block Association will be hosting a block party on July 26 (12-8) and will be planning for their National Night Out Ward 1/3 event.
- National Night Out: Planning and partnership meeting will be held on July 8 6:30 PM @ City Hall Library. If you would like to volunteer or for more information call Linda Carter at (908) 963-9135.

2008/05:
- Muhlenberg: On Thursday, June 5, the People's Organization for Progress (POP) will be holding a protest and hosting a public hearing at Plainfield High School. POP meets at DuCret Art School every Monday at 6:30 PM.
- Street Paving: The 15 year plan is underway.
- Music In The Plaza: Concerts will be presented by the city at the plaza on the corner of Front Street and Park Avenue, every Thursday, starting on June 5.
- Prosecutors Office: GPS devices continue to be one of the main reasons why automobiles are broken into in Union County. The theft of metal (e.g. aluminum) is also widespread, be vigilant of suspicious or unusual behavior.
- Next Meetings: YMCA representative will speak about their RAP program. Future topics may include: street conditions, parking and inspection code.

Operation CeaseFire New Jersey
Operation CeaseFire New Jersey is a statewide anti-violence campaign modeled after Operation CeaseFire Chicago. The initiative strives to achieve a substantial near-term impact on gun violence by engaging criminal justice, health, religious, and civic leaders to improve the quality of life and to Stop The Next Shooting. The core components of Operation CeaseFire are:
- Community Mobilization: develop a collaboration between residents, schools, businesses and social service organizations.
- Trained Outreach Worker: recruiting citizens from the community to interact directly with victim and their families.
- Public Awareness: use of multiple forms of mass media communication to raise the awareness about Operation CeaseFire.
- Clergy/Faith Based: use of local religious institutions to distribute materials, host prayer vigils, provide safe havens and counseling.
- Law Enforcement and Prosecution: focusing investigative and prosecutorial efforts to solve gun crimes and incapacitate/deter violent criminals.

Second Street Youth Center
The intention and purpose of Second Street Youth Center Foundation, Inc., is to promote the interest, welfare educational and social development of all children in the Plainfield, NJ community by actively working to create an environment that will nurture and shape their growth. Second Street Youth Center develops children’s competency, self-esteem and self-reliance through opportunities to make choices, experiment, create, imagine and inquire.

Plainfield Municipal Utilities Authority
The PMUA is asking that residents remove cans and bottles from plastic bags before placing them into the blue recycle bins. Clear plastic bags can only be used for shredded paper recycling. For more information contact PMUA at (908) 226-2518.

The City of Plainfield Police Division is in need of school crossing guards. Residency is required. Applications can be picked up at the desk of Plainfield Police Division Headquarters or at the Personnel Division office at City Hall. Newborns In Need
Newborns in Need (NIN) makes and donates baby gowns, blankets, and other essential baby items to hospitals, homeless shelters and other organizations that provide for premature and newborn infants. NIN meets on the 1st Saturday of every month in the Board Room of Muhlenberg Hospital. For more information contact Daphne Boyd (908) 561-8613.
Girls And Boys In Conversation
